Safety Measures to Follow in Case Your Car Breaks Down

Anyone can get stuck while driving on the road. There can be an incident when smoke starts billowing from the car’s engine. The car can accidentally hit it a massive pothole and make your car tyres pop. Sometimes the car’s engine light comes on and that calls for immediate assistance. These are certain incidences for which all the car drivers/owners should be prepared.

What if your car breaks down in the middle of the road?

If this question strikes your mind while driving then there are certain tips that you can follow. Having a car insurance policy also ensures that you get immediate help in case of a car breakdown. However, anyone who drives a car should be prepared in advance for any such emergencies that may arise on the go.

Due to the weather, hazardous road conditions and with the age it is quite common for your car to get normal wear and tear. Given that, it is better you follow these safety tips in case your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere –

1. Be Watchful of Your Location

While driving you should always stay alert and pay attention to signposts or landmarks on the way. If your car breaks down in an unknown area, it will prove to be very helpful.  It will be easier for you to seek help from someone or narrate your exact location.

2. Always Be Vigilant While Driving

Always look out for potential warning signs while driving your car. If there are any odd indications or sign of danger, you can immediately take an action. Checking your car for signs or indications while driving is a good habit, precisely for this reason.

If you notice the oil pressure warning light, wobbly steering wheel or hear strange sounds coming from the car floorboard – it is clear that something is wrong with your car. Park your car roadside or to a safer place and avoid driving because it can be risky for you as well as other motorists on the road.

3. Keep Your Car Packed with Safety Equipments

It is recommended to carry a safety kit. Carrying some extra batteries and phone, spare tyre, fire extinguisher, repairing tools, and water will help in a great way. What will you do if your car breaks down and you have no money? To ward off that situation always keep some extra cash.

You must be wondering, why do you need water? It will serve two purposes –It will keep you hydrated if you are stuck in the middle of the road and there is no water around. Secondly, if the engine heats up, you can use the water and pour it into the radiator to cool it down.

4. Get off the Road

If your car is not in a condition to drive, it is recommended that you take it far off the road. If you are stuck on a freeway, then it is safer to pull your car onto the hard shoulder if you can’t make it to a garage or workshop.

This way your vehicle will not obstruct the traffic and it will be easier for your car insurance provider or a mechanic to assist you with much-needed help.  Try to stand outside the vehicle rather than just sitting inside while waiting for help.

5. Alert Others of Your Cars’ Breakdown

You should alert others about the condition of your car. You can place some of the emergency or car breakdown sign at least 3 meters away from your stationary car facing the approaching traffic.

6. Call for Roadside Assistance

If you have a comprehensive car insurance policy, always opt for roadside assistance add-on cover. With this, you will get an immediate roadside assistance from your car insurance provider.

But before that, there are certain steps that you must follow –

  • Move your car to a less crowded location
  • Immediately call for assistance and inform them about your precise location
  • Even if you have car insurance, you should keep the contact information of towing services with you
  • Share your vehicle details and description with them
  • Also, share the location with them and take all the help that is required

Summing it up!

It is wise to have a car insurance policy, but it will be wiser if you are vigilant and pro-active to keep your safety intact while driving on the roads. Breaking down of you car is not in your hands, but taking safety measures is surely in your own hands. If you follow these measures you can stay protected wherever you go.
